Why We're Leaving London for Norwich

Why We're Leaving London for Norwich

After 18 wonderful years in London, we're beginning a new chapter. This summer, Indie Bride London will relocate its studio and showroom from London to Norwich. It's a change that feels both exciting and daunting, and one that has been a long time in the making. Looking back, there have been so many milestones, challenges, and unforgettable moments that have shaped both the business and me personally. I’ve taken some time to put my thoughts on paper, reflecting on our journey over the past 18 years, my own path as a designer and business owner, and the reasons that ultimately led us to make the move to Norwich.

A Journey That Started With One Suitcase

Although Indie Bride London was founded in 2008, my own journey with the business began in 2010 when I briefly joined as an intern. When I permanently moved from a small city in Eastern Finland to London in 2014, I arrived with just one suitcase. London became my home. It's where I built my life, met my partner, grew with this business personally and professionally, designed and made countless wedding dresses, and met hundreds of incredible brides.

For many years, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. But sometimes life changes. The places that once felt exciting begin to feel different. Priorities shift. What we need from our surroundings evolves. I guess it comes with age. Over the last few years, I've found myself longing for something slower. A place with more space, a stronger sense of community, and a closer connection to nature.

Falling in Love With Norwich

My first visit to Norwich was in 2018. I was meeting a friend and spent the day exploring the city. What stood out immediately was its character. I remember wandering through the historic streets and falling in love with places like St Gregory's Antiques & Collectables. There was something special about seeing historic buildings thoughtfully repurposed and given new life.

At the time, moving to Norwich wasn't on my radar. I was a freelancer working for Indie Bride London and fully focused on life in London. But the city stayed with me. My partner and I started discussing the possibility of leaving London and explored several alternatives, including Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich. Then, in July 2025, my partner and I visited Norwich for his birthday. We both fell in love with it. The beautiful historic streets, independent businesses, creative spirit, and calmer pace of life felt instantly right. Initially, we thought Norwich might simply be too far away from London (weird I know as that’s exactly what we wanted to do, leave London). But as we continued exploring other options, nothing compared. Every conversation seemed to lead us back to Norwich. Eventually, we realised it wasn't just somewhere we enjoyed visiting. It was where we wanted to build our future.

Learning the Value of Well-Made Things

My grandparents lived through war and were forced to flee Karelia after Finland surrendered the region to the Soviet Union. Their experiences shaped how they viewed possessions, resources and consumption. Nothing was wasted. Things were repaired, cared for and kept for as long as possible.

Growing up, those values became deeply ingrained in me. Today, they influence everything we do at Indie Bride London. We create wedding dresses designed to last, not just for a single day. We use carefully selected sustainable fabrics and make each gown to order. We don’t throw away our fabric waste but donate it to student projects or have it recycled.

We even offer our "The Next Chapter" service, allowing brides to alter their wedding dress after the wedding so they can continue wearing and enjoying it for years to come.

In many ways, our approach has always been about slowing down and choosing quality over quantity. Eventually, I realised I wanted my life to reflect those same values too.

Bringing a Different Bridal Experience to Norfolk

After six months searching for the right premises, we found our new home on Surrey Street. From 7 August 2026, brides will be able to visit our new showroom and studio in the heart of Norwich. The booking calendar is already open.

Norwich is home to talented independent businesses, beautiful wedding venues, and couples who value individuality, craftsmanship and sustainability. We're excited to become part of Norfolk's thriving creative community.

For brides across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and beyond, our move brings a new type of bridal experience to the region. When you visit us, you're not simply selecting a wedding dress from a rail. Instead of the bridal shop experience where you try on different styles from different designers with the help of a consultant, you will meet the designer and maker of your wedding dress and work with her throughout the process. Almost any request of yours can be fulfilled as they are taken into consideration from the very start of making your dress.

While our location is changing, everything that makes Indie Bride London what it is will remain exactly the same. Our dresses will still be handcrafted under the same roof where brides try them on, by a small team and with the same thoughtful craftsmanship and a focus on comfort and individuality. Every dress will still be made from carefully chosen sustainable fabrics. Every bride will continue to receive the same personal, designer-led experience that has always been at the heart of our business.

In an industry increasingly dominated by mass production and outsourced manufacturing, maintaining that connection between design, making and fitting remains incredibly important to us. The only difference is that our studio and showroom will now be based in Norwich. Whether you're planning a countryside celebration, a woodland wedding, a coastal ceremony, or an intimate gathering with your closest friends and family, we'll continue creating dresses designed for comfort, movement and authenticity.

Farewell London, Hello Norwich

Leaving London isn't easy. This city has shaped both me and my business in ways I'll always be grateful for. It gave me opportunities, friendships, inspiration and a home for many years. While we're excited about the future, there will always be a place in our hearts for London and for the brides who found us there.

As we prepare for this next chapter, we're feeling a mixture of nerves, excitement and gratitude. To every bride who has supported Indie Bride London over the years, thank you. We hope you'll continue this journey with us as we make Norwich our new home.
